5 Tips to Remodel a Small Bathroom to Make it Look Larger

Many older homes were built with small bathrooms that are just big enough to hold a bathtub, sink, and a small vanity. New homes have larger, master bathroom suites and “his and hers” vanity mirrors.

If you own an older home and are looking to remodel to make your bathroom appear larger, you can breathe new life into it without tearing down walls. Here are 5 excellent remodeling tips for you.

White or Light Color Palette

Keep everything a clean white or light cream. The light colors will help make the space look clean and large. Darker colors will make your bathroom appear cave-like so keep the color palette simple, light, and monochromatic.

Match the color of your tile to the color of your walls to make corners visually disappear. Choose light shades for cabinetry and keep the ceiling painted a basic white.

Add a Splash of Color

Adding a splash of color can help liven up the room. Use colors like yellow or red when choosing bathroom accessories and add a bathroom rug with texture and a bit of color. Swap your rug and accessories at any time for a fresh look and feel in your bathroom.

Make your Space Appear Taller

Add an elongated mirror above the sink to give the illusion of height. We also suggest replacing any chunkier molding, like crown molding, with something thinner. These upgrades will make your bathroom feel taller which will make it feel less claustrophobic.

Add Mirrors for Reflectivity and the Illusion of a Larger Room

It’s no secret that mirrors make a room look larger. A large vanity mirror will bounce light around the space and make it appear brighter as well.

Add some high-gloss fixtures to include more reflectivity in the area. These high-gloss fixtures will do the same thing as adding a mirror to your space.

Pocket Doors Allow More Functioning Space to Your Floor Plan

Replacing your standard bathroom door with a pocket door will give you back those few feet of square footage that are reserved for the door swing. With a pocket door, you’ll have a little bit more wiggle room and won’t have to worry about the intrusive swing cutting into your already tiny bathroom space.

Installing a pocket door does mean you will have to reframe the wall but don’t worry! The experts at Creative Home Designers can help with that!
