How to Design a Custom Home That's Safe for Kids in 5 Steps

When designing a customized home, it’s essential to ensure the home will be safe for each of its occupants. This includes children and aging family members.

There are several things you can do to child-proof your home no matter where you live, but when building a custom home, you can start putting safety first during the designing steps of your custom home build.

Read to the end for 5 steps for creating a custom home that’s safe for children.

ROUND OUT THE CORNERS OF YOUR COUNTERTOPS AND SURFACES

Curved elements are popular in home design trends currently, so finding a fantastic countertop that has rounded corners and edges should be no trouble. Rounded corners on your surfaces help alleviate some worry about bumped heads or scrapes.
Choose a double island with rounded features and go for round coffee tables, end tables, and furniture.

PREVENT DROWNING

Install a fence with a proper latch around any pool or hot tub areas to prevent drowning. You can also install toilet latches that are child-proof. Water temperature limits can also be placed on water heaters to prevent scalding.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FLOORING

Hardwood floors are great for messy cleanups and spills. They are easy to clean and hypoallergenic.
Choose area and accent rugs to keep your hardwood floors comfy so your child can sit and play. Smaller rugs can be tossed into the washing machine as needed.

ADD STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

Incorporating shelving or locking cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room, and even the bathroom can help keep household chemicals and medications out of your child’s reach. Make sure your utility room has lots of upper storage to house your cleaners, sprays, and bleaches.

In the kitchen, make sure there is plenty of safe storage for knives and dangerous appliances. Child safety locks are great, but not foolproof, so make sure you are doing all that you can to keep these items out of reach.

CHOOSE CHILD-PROOF OUTLETS

Child-proof electrical outlets are an excellent way to prevent electrical accidents in your home. Installing child-proof electrical outlets on the front end will save you from needing to juggle plastic outlet covers later. You’ll have them as long as you need them and if you find them annoying later, any outlet can be recovered to a standard outlet using just a few parts from the hardware store.
