How to Design Your Kitchen So It Works for You

We spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Whether you’re snacking, fixing a cup of coffee, or preparing a holiday feast, the kitchen is truly the heart of the home. Since we spend so much time in the kitchen (especially during the pandemic era) it should be a place that is efficient and has a great flow, not a place that leads to daily frustration.

Here are some ideas to consider when planning your dream kitchen:

Breakfast Nook

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and even if you aren’t a big breakfast eater it’s still nice to have a great spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or tea. This area would be a tranquil spot to sit and read or journal each morning and many breakfast nooks are located next to sunny windows. Having a space like this can help promote healthy habits and can set the tone for a wonderful day.

Beverage Area

One of my favorite ideas for a well-planned kitchen is a clever beverage area. This is a wonderfully efficient area to prepare a cup of coffee or grab a glass of water from the water cooler. With all of your beverage accessories like cups, mugs, and spoons handy in one spot, this is the place you come when you are thirsty. Even when it’s time to grab a glass of wine to unwind after a long day. To read more about these beverage oases you can check out our blog post about them here

Pantry

A must-have for today’s homeowner is a marvelously deep walk-in pantry with lots of storage. Pantries come with extra shelves for storing non-perishables and lesser-used items. Some are even built with extra counter space which I find to be most helpful when unloading weekly groceries. Some pantries even have a convenient sink or a second dishwasher which allows the pantry to serve as a place to hide the mess of clean up while guests are still enjoying themselves.

Butlers’ Pantry

A true Butlers’ Pantry traditionally is placed between the kitchen and formal dining room. A Butlers’ Pantry will typically include lots of counter space, at least one sink, and most often a dishwasher or two. A Butlers’ Pantry helps homemakers and hosts forget about the mess and allows them to enjoy the party without the embarrassment of a messy kitchen or a sink full of dirty dishes. A host can drop off dirty dishes or have a space to stow away unused portions until it’s time to put them away in the fridge. A Butlers’ Pantry often can also serve as a pantry but some home plans include both.
