Top 5 Interior Design Trends for Custom Homes in 2023

In last week’s blog, we talked about exterior home design trends for this year. Now it’s time to talk about what our Oklahoma clients are loving for home layouts and interiors in 2023.

Since the pandemic started back in 2020, the way people live has changed dramatically and that means homeowners are spending more time in their houses and so are their families. This includes cooking, exercising, working, and entertaining from the home.

There is also a need for privacy within the home, away from other family members. These new challenges and needs have created new trends in home design layouts. Let’s take a closer look at some of the latest trends.

SCULLERIES AND BACK-OF-HOUSE KITCHENS

With families spending more time in the home, homebuyers are looking for house layouts that have some separation between the kitchen and the rest of the home. There are several reasons why someone might like to have a back-of-house kitchen.

One reason for a scullery kitchen is to keep cooking aromas from traveling into the rest of the home. Open-concept floor plans can be light, airy, and breathtaking but it can be irksome for guests in the Great Room who may go home smelling like whatever you are cooking. A back-of-house kitchen also solves this problem and also keeps your messy kitchen tucked away out of sight, out of mind so you can entertain seamlessly and take care of the mess later. This keeps the rest of your home looking picture-perfect and spotless.

AGING IN PLACE

One of the most practical trends we see currently is the request for universal design. Universal design, or aging in place, is building a home that will transition easily into an accessible home if a person’s mobility were to be affected. This includes homes that are designed to accommodate a wheelchair. Homes with larger hallways and adequate spaces to turn a wheelchair around are essential to universal design.

RECREATION AND MEDIA ROOMS

Media and entertainment rooms have always been included in custom home design but there has been a resurgence in this trend since the pandemic. It seems as though no one wants to get caught without these spaces should the need arise to shelter in place again.

Home gyms, game rooms, theater, and media rooms are being created with intention and with the homebuyer in mind.

ENSUITE ACCESSORIES

Ensuite bathrooms are more and more common these days. It is rare to see a bedroom in a new custom home build that doesn’t have an ensuite bathroom. Ensuite bathrooms do add to the building cost but they also add value to the home. Ensuite bathrooms are also perfect for families that want to offer hospitality to aging family members or young adult children when they’re visiting.

Some of our other most requested ensuites include ensuite sitting areas, walk-in closets with laundry facilities, and a private patio for the suite.

Our Bergen plan has a bunkroom on the second floor.

BUNKROOMS

Bunkrooms provide a space that can be used for grandchildren and large groups to enjoy a sleepover. Bunkrooms are the perfect solution when hosting family get-togethers.

A custom-designed bunkroom will account for enough overhead to make sleeping in the top bed as comfortable as possible. With the resurgence of entertaining at home and with how important it feels to spend quality time with friends and family, many homeowners want a space like this so they can accommodate all of their loved ones with no issue.
