Urban Infill: Design Considerations For A Gorgeous, Thriving Community

Oklahoma City and its surrounding cities are quickly growing in population. In 2021, Oklahoma City joined the list of top 20 largest cities. It’s now the 6th fastest growing city in America.

Oklahoma City has a lot to offer, but with an increase in population there is also a shortage of housing.

If you’re keen to take advantage of this situation, developing an urban infill community may be the solution. Here are three design considerations to reflect upon when deciding how you want your urban infill development to look and feel.

CREATING A CONNECTION TO NATURE & BLENDING WITH EXISTING STRUCTURES

While your urban infill community may not be spacious enough to afford conventional yards, it’s important to consider how you’ll bring nature into your design. Human’s thrive when there are green spaces around them. Will you create backyards for your row homes or will you allow space for a courtyard of some kind? Will you add attractive features like a dog park to your community or will you plant trees instead? Consider how you’ll incorporate natural elements into your design.

You may also consider including elements from local existing structures and pulling them into your home design elements.

CREATING A SENSE OF PRIVACY

Due to the density of urban infill communities, consider how you’ll add a layer of privacy between homes in your community as well as between the home and busy streets. This may look like adding hedges, fences, walkways, or even fountains that detract from the noise pollution of the city. This could also mean adding a fence or a gated entry.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPACE & COMMUNITY

It’s important that you and your team have a sense of context when designing an urban infill community. You’ll want to make sure you are being sensitive to existing neighbors and neighborhoods. Carefully select home designs that are sensitive in terms of material and scale. Work with the existing character of the area and try to add to it rather than detract or distract with gaudy or oversized homes that stand out like a sore thumb.
