Creative Remodeling Ideas: Designing the Laundry Room of Your Dreams

Whether you are planning a home remodel or designing your custom home from scratch, the laundry or utility room is an often overlooked area of a home. You spend countless hours in this space cleaning and folding clothes, ironing, or hanging laundry to dry. You want to make sure it is an efficient space that is comfortable and easy to clean, and won’t cause headaches and hassle later down the line.

Read on for 5 of our best tips (+ a bonus tip) covering designing the custom laundry room of your dreams.

CONSIDER ADDING TILES AND SPLASHBACKS

Since the laundry is a room with plumbing and water, you’ll want to consider tiling this area. Consider adding splashbacks or tiling the walls as well for painless clean-up. You don’t need to match the tile with the bathrooms or kitchen in the house so if budget is an issue, consider using a lower-cost tile.

Since this area isn’t often seen by guests and can be tucked away behind a pocket door, you can have fun with your tile options and make it a cheery place to be.

CONSIDER VENTILATION AND LIGHTING OPTIONS

Good airflow in the utility room will help prevent moisture, mildew, and mold. Adding a window in this space, especially one that can be locked open while you are gone is a great choice. It also will allow tons of natural light into the area so you can see what you’re doing.

A large skylight can also be handy in this space.

This floorplan includes laundry facilities in the master closet in addition to the spacious utility room.

A WALK-THROUGH FROM THE MASTER BEDROOM

Our clients love utility rooms that are functional within the layout of their homes. Some of our clients choose to include a door in their master bedroom or master bathroom that walks through to the utility room for quick and easy laundry service.

Many of our clients with two-story homes choose to incorporate a laundry chute. Others add a smaller (closeted) laundry room on their second story so they won’t need to lug heavy hampers up and down their staircase. Some even opt to add a second laundry room in the master closet. Wherever you choose to place your laundry room, make sure it’s a space that makes sense for your family and their habits.

CUSTOM CABINETRY AND EXTRA COUNTER SPACE

Store your stain remover and laundry detergent out of sight by including custom cabinetry in your utility room. This is also a great place to supply household cleaning supplies, extra sponges, and even spare linen.

Adding countertops to this space provides an ideal place to fold laundry or lay out sweaters to dry. If your laundry room is positioned near the garage, extra counter space can also make the perfect drop zone when unloading groceries.

THE LAUNDRY ROOM DOES NOT A MUDROOM MAKE

Our clients love to have a separate space for the laundry separate from the mudroom. Separating these two rooms helps make sure that your laundry room won’t become a catch-all and won’t remain in a permanent state of disorganization.

Having a designated and intentional space for laundry makes all the difference and helps alleviate some of the pressure of this daily or weekly chore.

BONUS IDEAS

Our clients love their custom homes to include a deep sink in the laundry room for messy jobs. This helps them from needing to drag messy jobs (like cleaning out the carpet cleaner or vacuum) back into their already clean kitchens. That’s why tile is such a great choice here!

Adding a pet wash station is also a great choice here. We have designed pet wash stations with two doors for our past clients. One door leads to the outdoors and one door leads to the indoors. A showerhead and drain can be added in the space between them. This helps confine the mess to one area and keep your pet in position.
