Outdoor Living: 5 Ways to Maximize Enjoyment of Your Outdoor Living Space

Many things changed during the Pandemic-era including how much time we spent at home. Family and home-life came to the forefront and a spotlight was placed on how important quality time is with loved ones. Many homebuyers opted to revamp or even expand their backyard and outdoor living spaces. And this trend isn’t going anywhere.

If your outdoor living space needs spruced up, here are 5 ideas to consider for your home remodel or custom home construction plans:

Our Scottsdale plan is a great example of a home with private backyard access.

Add Doors to Bedrooms for Outdoor Access

One of my favorite things to see in design plans is one or more bedrooms that have access to outdoor living. And while of course it may not be the safest idea to have a door that leads outside in a child’s room, a Master bedroom with outdoor access and even a guest bedroom with backyard access can make all the difference.

Imagine tiptoeing out of the house from your master bedroom to enjoy a sit-and-think on your backyard chaise lounge or stargazing without waking up the entire household. This simple customization screams freedom, independence, and luxury.

Our “Matisse” plan includes a wonderful pool bath.

Add a Clever Pool Bath

If your home design plan includes a pool or a hot tub, think about adding a Pool Bath to your floor plan. While this may sound extravagant it is really not as insane as it sounds. Your Pool Bath can stand alone or it can double as a walk-through bathroom with two doors, one which leads to your pool and one which leads inside allowing it to serve as a guest room bathroom or powder room, depending upon the layout of the rest of your custom home. We love the Pool Bath because it is impressive and unique and it helps keep the rest of the house tidy by providing a space to towel off and remove or hang wet clothing. No more stressing about guests dripping or walking through the house with wet feet!

The Perfect Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Area

Nothing brings people together like a great meal! Adding an outdoor kitchen and dining area to your custom home plan creates opportunities for endless hosting experiences, it also encourages guests to mingle outdoors.

A great outdoor kitchen will be complete with everything you need to cook your meal without you (the chef) having to run inside every three seconds, which quickly becomes a serious mood killer. A thoughtful outdoor kitchen will be complete with a mini-fridge, plenty of counter space, and a sink to help create a stress-free cooking environment so that you don’t miss out on precious time with your friends and family. A gorgeous outdoor dining area will also make for a simple transition from grill to table. There is nothing worse than forcing your guests to follow you outside while you’re grilling and then back inside to eat. Make your party a seamless experience by setting the table beforehand and stocking your outdoor fridge with everything you’ll need. You may even consider setting up a drink cart complete with iced teas, lemonades, lime wedges, ice, liquors, and whatever else you’ll be serving in the way of tasty beverages.

An Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit (Or Both!)

No matter what the weather, an outdoor fireplace or fire pit always makes a great conversation piece and helps bring people together. Having one of each is the perfect way to go as it promotes mingling among groups. The more rustic friends in your group will have fun feeding sticks or logs into your fire pit and those that like to relax will enjoy kicking their feet up on your outdoor couch or seating to watch the fire turn colors in the fireplace.

The glow of the fireplace is mesmerizing no matter who you are and makes for an unforgettable time. These spaces also provide warmth and comfort. You can even add a few cozy blankets into the mix and watch as memories are made and bonds form.

A Dreamy Sitting Patio with Pergola or Cabana Seating

Every outdoor living space should have a shady place to grab a seat and read a book. You can install a wood pergola and add a versatile couch and some pillows and even an outdoor rug to help section off the space. Give the area a Cabana feel by adding an unlined fabric. This will provide shade and give you the illusion that you’re on vacation away from the stresses of your day-to-day life. When done correctly a Pergola or Sitting Patio can transform you to a place of tranquility and relaxation and will quickly become your favorite spot in the home.
